What do you feed your dog?

We launched our new premium cold pressed dog food at PATS in Telford in September 2018; our now flagship product, built upon a long history of quality and value for money.

We could not be happier with the results. It’s the Wilsons difference: “The Cold Press process itself brings a number of benefits, however, at Wilsons we are mindful that a well-rounded product needs good quality ingredients and a well-balanced, nutritional recipe.”

The recipe and the ingredients are everything.

There is a beautiful trend that has been growing across the nation for some years; people are becoming more and more particular about what they feed their dogs. Gone are the days when the majority thoughtlessly grab the convenient bag of ‘kibble’ from the supermarket; today’s shopper is more discerned and in partnership with this, there is a cold pressed revolution taking place. People are enjoying all the benefits of a high quality, nutritionally balanced raw diet, with the speed, ease, variety, cost effectiveness and simplicity that Wilsons Cold Pressed Dog Food brings.  (If you have not made the switch yet from standard kibble to cold press; here’s TEN REASONS why you should!)

Our Managing Director, Craig Wallace, was asked by Sal of WoofWagWalkWhy Cold Press?

…I was so impressed with the passion and enthusiasm that exude from the guys behind the brand I thought it would be best to let them tell you more themselves, Craig Wallace, Co-owner & Managing Director of Wilsons took the time to answer them himself.

1. What inspired you to develop a cold pressed range?
“I was fed up of poor quality dog foods. & from my years in food manufacture, I knew there’d be a better way. We’ve all been dog owners… & I think there is a better way to look after them; so why wouldn’t we?”

2. How did you research and develop the recipe for your food?
“Our research took us to Europe, where cold press technology is an established industry. There are a number of companies that have been importing it into the UK for a while and interest is starting to grow but we were only interested in manufacturing here in the UK… so we sought out one of the world’s leading nutritional experts in the industry to help us. Her one question to us was: “If I help you, will you use my recipes?” She had already explained the expense and difficulty in creating positive nutritional value with a limited ingredient/protein diet but that this backed by all the scientific data, was her standard. For us, there was just one question too: “CAN we please use your recipes?” so a perfect partnership began! For us, there would be no compromise; the intention was to make the very best, perfectly balanced, nutritionally complete, cold pressed dog food with the exact amount of additional functional ingredients that all the scientific data over the years had indicated; to produce, quite simply; the best possible cold pressed dog food we possibly could. The most wonderful thing; is the feedback we are already getting back from those who have been trialling the food. We could not be more happy with the results.”

3. Do you have dogs of your own, and if so, do they eat Wilsons Cold Pressed?
“We have Bruce; our Dogue de Bordeaux! He’s still a big puppy really, not even two. He’s precious, and on the cold pressed, of course. He likes the Lamb & Rice best! That’s what makes him happy… and that’s what it’s all about.”

“Variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavour.” ~ William Cowper 1785

Our recipes have been designed with a limited ingredient ethos with single source protein. These high-quality ingredients combine with our carefully balanced functional ingredients: berries, roots and herbs, to boost and strengthen the immune system, so that it can do its natural defensive work; providing the right nutrition to effectively keep our faithful friends safe and healthy, for longer, happier lives…

Our Cold Press comes in three unique, yet complementary varieties…

Secret Pasture

Our Lamb & Rice variety; Secret Pasture, is our immediate “go-to” for dogs with suspected allergenicity problems. This meal has been designed with functional ingredients specifically, to repair and strengthen gut health.  It has a high percentage of single-source protein: lamb, fresh from the mountains of Wales and full of beneficial nutrients including protein (including carnosine; a compound containing beta-alanine and histidine that studies show, helps to protect against cardiovascular disease and also helps to reduce the glycation of sugars and proteins, actively slowing the aging process) healthy fats (including omega-3 fatty acid) vitamins (particularly Vitamin B complex) and minerals (especially iron, phosphorus, selenium and zinc) and mixed with a blend of premium low-allergenicity brown rice, vegetables, fruit, berries, herbs, minerals and natural supplements; all in perfect nutritional balance.

Secret Pasture was an instant hit with Joan and Eddie Orr’s dog Coira: “We rediscovered Wilson’s recently, thank goodness! I have a 4yr old bearded collie who suffers from allergies we think to the environment. This has resulted in her having very red sore skin on her stomach and paws. We have started her on cold pressed lamb and brown rice… the results in matter of days was amazing; her skin has lost its redness and has begun to regress in the patches where she had been scratching!! Her coat is completely different with a bounce and shine I never thought she would have! She is now one very happy dog.”

Most dogs tolerate wheat and other grains quite well and have no adverse effects from having them in their diet. However, some do not.  In some dogs, high levels of gluten (a protein found in wheat) can affect the digestive system, which can lead to malabsorption and immune suppression. This reduced efficiency in nutrient transfer, can lead to deterioration in behaviour, depression, skin and coat quality, or any number of other ailments. The reality is (as with humans!) dogs can be kept well with good nutrition. With a lot of dog foods, we really do not know what they actually contain! At Wilsons, we have full transparency and traceability of our ingredients.  We know exactly what is going into our press, why, and where it is from. We have designed two of our products to be completely grain free with our Secret Pasture using a low allergenicity grain: brown rice.

Sunrise Song

Our Chicken and Vegetable is the perfect nutritionally complete grain-free, premium meal, with a good level of protein; premium UK sourced chicken as the number one ingredient. Isoleucine; assists with wound healing and recovery after exercise, growth, and the stabilization of blood sugar levels. Threonine; helps in maintaining the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and immune system) and glucosamine, which helps promote bone health. Chicken is also extremely rich in vitamins and minerals:
